As science races forward, the notion of ending aging is no longer confined to the realm of speculative fiction; it stands at the threshold of reality, with researchers pushing the boundaries of human longevity using gene therapies, cellular reprogramming, and artificial intelligence-driven drug discovery.
Inspired by dramatic breakthroughs that suggest age reversal may one day be possible, from restoring youthfulness in animal models to developing molecules that reset cellular age, the longevity market is shifting its focus from simply extending lifespans to enhancing health-spans and fundamentally transforming the experience of growing older.
The global longevity market is projected to grow from about $19 billion in 2023 to more than $63 billion by 2035, at an annual growth rate over 10%. It spans a range of sectors, including biotech and pharma, digital health and AI, advanced diagnostics, functional nutrition, regenerative medicine, genetics and preventive healthcare, and wellness services.
This May, the inaugural Longevity Med Summit will be held in Cascais, Portugal, with more than 1,000 world-renowned scientists and investors with €10 billion available to apply in longevity medicine convening in this coastal city. The Longevity Med Summit is a major international event dedicated to healthcare, wellness, and longevity innovation. Notable speakers such as Aubrey de Grey (LEV Foundation) will present rejuvenation biotechnology strategies that target multiple aging pathways from senolytic compounds to gene therapy and Andrea Meier (National University of Singapore) will discuss the importance of body clocks and organ-specific clocks in predicting age-related diseases.
“Today there are not only investment funds, but also large companies and laboratories that are highly focused on the development of this market. For example, we are seeing a lot of interest from international investors in this area in Portugal”, said the organizer Jorge Lima, as the country “has good companies in the area of cutting-edge biotechnology, which have already been operating for a good few years, especially in the Centre and North”, and “there is a whole ecosystem that is supported by institutes, universities and accelerators”.
Elsewhere in Europe, Switzerland commands a unique and influential leadership position in the global longevity market, built on its world-class research, pioneering clinical institutions, strategic investment networks, and a distinctive ecosystem that marries privacy, luxury, and medical innovation. Leading clinics such as Clinique La Prairie in Montreux are offering science-driven experiences, such as week-long “Brain Potential” programs that use cerebral MRIs and DNA assessments alongside neuro-nutrition and brain-body movement coaching. Swiss consumers are turning to health and wellness coaching, with strong growth in fitness, meditation, and nutrition apps powered by AI and real-time tracking. Also, there is a rapid rise in premium, hyper-personalized nutrition and longevity programs, with supplement and biohacking markets targeting healthy aging and cellular health. Furthermore, wellness tourism is expanding, featuring immersive retreats in alpine and lakeside destinations, as Swiss hospitality appeals to travellers seeking both high-tech diagnostics and nature-based therapies. Finally, Switzerland hosts the Longevity Investors Conference (LIC) in Gstaad annually, widely viewed as the most exclusive global forum uniting top longevity scientists, high-net-worth investors, and visionary startups, catalyzing billions in annual investment and forging cross-disciplinary longevity alliances.
In Asia, Japan is a global leader in the longevity market with a special distinction in regenerative treatments. The country is renowned for regulatory and clinical innovation in regenerative medicine, especially stem cell therapy. Clinics such as Tokyo Himawari Clinic, Artisan Clinic Hibiya, and Helene Clinic offer patient-centric autologous stem cell therapies targeting aging, chronic disease, and aesthetic rejuvenation. These therapies often use mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) derived from the patient’s own tissue (fat or bone marrow), processed in certified labs, and reintroduced to repair, regenerate, or rejuvenate organs and tissues at the cellular level. Regenerative protocols go beyond symptom management; they aim for organ-specific restoration (e.g., brain, heart, muscle, auditory system), using precision cell infusions to biohack and reverse biological age. Success rates are generally high, with improvements in vitality, tissue function, and self-reported quality of life.
Japan’s approach to wellness is to blend deep-rooted cultural practices with advanced biomedical and health innovation. Japan consistently ranks #1 in global longevity, boasting average life expectancies above 84 years and more than 90,000 centenarians. Wellness tourism has been growing, centered on onsen (hot springs), forest bathing (shinrin-yoku), and Zen mindfulness retreats, which are being enhanced with health diagnostics for both locals and foreigners. The nutrition sector is booming too, with strong demand for functional foods such as fermented soy, pickled plums, and high-profile collagen supplements aimed at beauty, joint, and gut health. Leading clinics such as the Japan Longevity Clinic in Tokyo provide advanced therapies including exosome and NMN (nicotinamide mononucleotide) infusions, cutting-edge cell therapies, and comprehensive metabolic and genetic testing.
As society continues to blend science, technology, and human connection, the future of wellness and longevity looks increasingly personalized, inclusive, and proactive.
